A Small, Rural Community with Great People

Building Permits

Building permits are required for many projects on homes and businesses in the village. The purpose of a building permit is to ensure that a building project is properly done, to ensure the health and safety of residents, and to maintain property values.

Examples of building projects for which a permit may be required are:
  • Additions
  • Fireplaces
  • New home construction
  • Porches
  • Decks
  • Siding
  • Window replacement
  • Basement finishing
  • Electrical upgrades or re-routing
  • Plumbing upgrades or re-routing
  • Garages
  • Re-roofing
  • Swimming pool, hot tub, Jacuzzi
  • Privacy fences
  • Gazebos
  • Sheds
  • Septic system installation, addition, or repair
  • Digging or drilling of wells
  • Excavating or constructing any foundation

To obtain a building permit or to discuss whether or not one is required on a project, phone the Village office at (630) 557-0037.

Failure to obtain a permit may result in a doubling of the permit fee.

Be aware that any project that requires digging in the ground will require a JULIE inspection in order to locate underground utilities. Just phone 811 to schedule a JULIE inspection.

The Kane County Building Division provides building permit plan review and inspection services, after approval of a permit by the Village Building Code Enforcement Officer, under an intergovernmental agreement approved by the County and the Village. The agreement states that the Village will review and approve the original permit application form before the application and other submittals will be accepted by the Kane County Building Division.

Following is a link to the permit form that may be downloaded and filled in prior to requesting review and approval by the Village Enforcement Officer, and a link to the Kane County Building and Zoning website that has more information. If you require assistance in completing the form, contact the Enforcement Officer, who will meet with you to render assistance.
